The Importance Of Community

From the very beginning God said, “It is not good for man to be alone. One of the main reasons God could say that so emphatically is because from the very beginning HE HAS NOT BEEN ALONE! Did you know that God has always existed in perfect community? God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit…Each 100% God, the same in essence…but very different in function.

God the Father is God the Father – He exists in spirit form and is in charge of everything. But He is not God the Son, Jesus Christ is God’s Son. He’s the One who came to earth to die for me and rise from the dead to save me from myself and from the consequences of my poor choices. But Jesus is not the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit lives inside of my soul…and because I’ve committed my life to God, the Bible says God’s Spirit lives in me…my body is His Temple.

These three members of the God-Head exist in perfect community with one another and give us the example of the importance of living in community with other people. We all need other people in our life. We need people to encourage us and help us along the way, but we also need people who have the ability to kick our butt and help us become better people at times too!

So whether you consider yourself a “people person or not, if you call yourself a Christ-follower, the Bible says you will pursue genuine community in your life…you will do whatever it takes to go after it and experience community with other people who can help point you toward Christ…and you can do this same thing with these people!

So how about taking a chance and pursuing community with some people in your life? Get vulnerable, open up your heart. It won’t always work right away with everyone, but it’s worth it – it’s the best way to live! Jesus lived in community with 12 other guys while He was here on earth, so He’s our example. And out of those 12, he was even tighter with three of them! If that kind of community was important enough for God in the flesh, shouldn’t it be important enough for us too?
