It Is Not Your Fault

What’s it like watching your parents go through a divorce? (Pause) Honestly…I don’t know what you’re going through because I’ve not personally experienced it myself. I’ve seen some of the effects of divorce because I’ve worked with students whose parents went through it, and my own mom got divorced from her first husband before she married my dad…but even though I’ve not experienced it, I know how much it affects you.

I can only imagine how difficult it is. I can’t imagine some of the feelings going on inside you. But here’s what I want you to know: It’s not your fault. I know it sucks to be put through and you’ve probably got a lot of stuff rolling around inside…feelings of anger and abandonment and probably some other stuff too right? You may even need some help sorting through all that and dealing with it in an appropriate way…but none of it is your fault and even God thinks it sucks that you had to go through it!

But here’s what I want you to hear me say: Don’t let it ruin the rest of your life. Don’t keep it locked up inside so it slowly eats away at your soul. You need to find someone you trust and talk it out. You need to off-load what you’re feeling by talking to God about it. Let Him know how angry you are. He can take it. And He wants to help you start healing.

I know you don’t want your own kids to go through what you’re going through, so it’s really important for you to sort through some of this stuff. It’s really important to start the healing process…to talk to God about it. To forgive those who’ve hurt you. And to learn how your life can be different! God wants what’s best for you…He really does. Even though it seems incredibly difficult and painful at times, God cares for you. He loves you…and He wants what’s best for you and your family.

What do you want?
